Colorado, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, & Washington LABOR LAW CHANGES

Businesses Residing in Colorado, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, & Washington... Labor laws have changed in your state and it is a mandatory requirement that updated posters are displayed.

Colorado Unemployment Insurance: Your poster has been updated with additional information and resources on employee mis-classification and independent contractor status. The poster was also updated with a new web address that employees can use to file for unemployment insurance benefits. Effective June 8, 2019

New Jersey Family Leave Act: This posting will apply to employers with 30 or more employees. The poster was also updated to clarify how much notice employees must give employers when requesting intermittent or consecutive family leave. Effective June 30, 2019

New Jersey Family Leave Insurance: New Jersey law provides up to 12 weeks of family leave insurance benefits.The poster was also updated to reflect that family leave insurance can be used for domestic or sexual violence and that employees are permitted up to 56 days of intermittent leave. The definition of family member was also updated. Effective July 1, 2019

New York Time Off for Voting: Your poster has been updated to reflect that employees may request up to three hours of paid time off to vote. The poster was also updated to reflect that employees must request the time off to vote not less than two working days before the date of the election. Effective May 11, 2019

Oregon Minimum Wage: Minimum wage will increase to $12.50 per hour inside the Portland Metro area, $11.00 per hour in non-urban counties, and $11.25 per hour in the remainder of the state. Effective July 1, 2019.

Washington Rights as a Worker: Your poster has been updated with information about the new Paid Family and Medical Leave program. Beginning in 2020, it will allow most employees to receive up to 12 weeks of paid leave for bonding after the birth or placement of a child, an employee's serious health condition, a serious health condition of a qualifying family member and certain military events. The poster was also updated with information about the new Equal Pay Opportunity Act. The law prohibits employers from providing unequal pay or career advancement opportunities based on gender. Effective July 22, 2019

The CMS-1500 remains the most frequently used form in the Unites States, with billions filed each year. That being said, paper products are experiencing major shifts. Distribution channels are changing, manufacturing costs are tumultuous and customers are moving away from tried-and-true processes.

What's Causing the Shift?

#1: The Rise of Cloud-Based Processing

We live in an increasingly digital world, from our homes to our workplaces and everything in between. As we replace more and more manual processes with online solutions, it’s no surprise that some reporting is experiencing the same shift. E-billing is gaining traction because it’s convenient and accurate, but costly to start it in your small business.

#2: Skyrocketing Manufacturing Costs

With people today handling more and more tasks electronically, it might surprise you to learn that paper prices are rising. Prices for the pulp necessary to manufacture paper have increased up to 40%. Manufacturers are absorbing a large percentage of the cost but they must raise prices in order to survive.

Why is This Happening? E-commerce is partly to blame. As Americans shop more online, the need for packing materials increases. Many mills have stopped traditional bond paper manufacturing and instead are producing cardboard boxes and other packing materials. This drastic decline in bond paper production has led to the price increase.

#3: The Cost of Shipping Goods

Freight pricing is increasing: Diesel fuel prices have gone up over the past few years so it costs more to transport products to consumers.
Tariffs have been implemented on paper imports from Canada: This has strained the paper supply.
Labor costs are rising: This year alone, 20 states and many cities/counties have increased the rate they pay minimum wage workers.

Bottom-Line: The price for paper continues to go up.
